Bed Rest Prep

12249679_1195716180579577_864640948855096318_nAnyone who has spent more than 5 minutes with me will tell you I absolutely HATE staying still. Luckily I am headed toward 4-6 weeks of bed rest in 6 days! While I am excited to FINALLY have my foot dealt with I worry about bed rest, logically I know all I can do is prepare to the best of my ability. Here’s what I’ve managed so far:

  • Loose fitting clothes that will fit around a surgical shoe [limited selection, but at least there’s some]
  • Some meal planning of things my husband can cook
  • Stockpiling crafts
  • Stockpiling books
  • Arranging for visits from friends and family
  • Planning my couch nest
  • Working ahead on holiday gifts. Almost everything is bought and wrapped already.

This is all I have been able to think of doing so far, if anyone has experience with bed rest I’d love to hear your thoughts. The longest I’ve ever been off my feet was 2-3 weeks after my double knee surgery.

SIDE NOTE ABOUT PAIN MEDICATION:

As most of you know I went through treatment to get off of Vicodin and Tramadol as it was not controlling my chronic pain and causing issues. Due to the fact that I’m at risk for dependency I have created a dose schedule which tapers my dose and have requested to be put on a less potent pain medication. Mayo Clinic PRC protocol states that use of pain medication in acute situations is permitted. More on this to come.

  1. Thank you for the update, Maddie.  Your planning is impressive. I did order some coloring books from Daedalus that should get to you sometime soon.  But just now I looked online at Michaels’ offerings; there are some that look interesting.  Also, it occurred to me that you might need colored pencils and/or markers. You should be the one to choose what appeals to you, though.  There’s not a Michaels in Stillwater, I see, so what I’d like to do is send you, online, a gift card for Michaels, with which you could then order stuff online, to be shipped to you.  Would that be a good idea?  Just say the word, and I’ll do it.  (Or not.) Another “activity” that occurs to me is singing!  It seems to me you’ve said you, too, sing when you’re driving.

  2. Good luck with the bed rest. I’m assuming that this literally means lying in bed for four weeks. If it could mean also sitting up in one of those wheelchairs with the leg rests, that would be awesome. At least you could get up for a while each day. Otherwise, it sounds like you’re set up as best you can at this point. Things will evolve as you move forward. And the time will actually go by faster than you anticipate. At the beginning it will seem like the time will never pass then, before you know it, you’re looking at the end of the (prison) sentence. I am sorry that you’re having to do this, but I’m glad you’re actually getting some resolution with the issues. Good luck with the pain med situation. Hang in there and please keep us posted.

    • Thank you! Yes I will be lying in bed or on our sofa downstairs. They gave me a roll about that goes under my left leg and lets me scoot around. My husband has been so helpful with keeping me sane and comfortable, he deserves some sort of award. I’ll keep everyone updated as I stumble through the recovery process!
